In 2002 Lt. Gen. Sumbeiywo was appointed as Kenya’s Special Envoy to the Inter Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional organisation for the Horn of Africa. In this position, Gen. Sumbeiywo was the lead mediator in the Sudanese North-South peace process.
Lt. Gen. Sumbeiywo was the Kenya Army Commander from 2000 until he retired in February 2003 in order to fully devote himself to completing the peace process in Sudan.
He was born in 1947 in Elgeyo (Marakwet district of Kenya). In 1968 he was enrolled in Britain's Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. After stints in the Air Force, running military intelligence, and directing liaison in the President’s Office from 1987 to 1997, he became involved in the Somalia Kenya Peace Initiative in 1996.
Lt. Gen. Sumbeiywo participated as a mediator in the Goma Peace Talks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which took place in 2009.
In December 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Lt. Gen. Sumbeiywo as the mediator to the then ongoing conflict in the South Sudan in an effort towards lasting peace.
